High school football and Texas go hand in hand. But the tradition is under pressure as the world suffers from intensifying heat waves, which Reuters recently revealed have morphed from intermittent events to globe-spanning phenomena we call “heat storms.”
The consequences can be fatal. In the last decade, twelve high school football players have died from heat-related illness. And Texas, arguably the state most associated with high school football, experiences some of the worst heat storms in America.
Schools are adapting by implementing new rules aimed at protecting football players including regular breaks during practices.
Callaghan O’Hare and Pete Mckenzie travelled to Texas to capture how the game is changing.
