🎓 Can I ask a college for more merit aid? |
It’s college decision season in the U.S. Admitted students typically need to decide what college or university they plan to attend by May 1.
Good news is hard to find these days, which is why I love to hear about college acceptances. I was especially excited when a friend’s daughter was admitted to a private college in Florida, which offered a $250,000 Presidential Scholarship. It works out to roughly half of the tuition to cover a five-year architecture program. Another New York school offered $165,000 in merit aid.
But can you push a school for an even bigger discount? Here is what experts have to say in my latest A$K Lauren column.

🥒 When finding the patch becomes a real pickle |

While the cost of weight-loss drugs dominates the headlines, all my friends can talk about is where to find the estrogen patch and other hormone replacement medications at our local pharmacies!
The U.S. FDA began publicly extolling hormone replacement therapy as "lifesaving", and in November it removed a longstanding safety warning from the therapies. The change in the Food and Drug Administration's stance was followed by a 26% jump in patch use through February, according to data from health data and analytics company Truveta.
Getting prescriptions filled requires a monthly scramble. The menopausal ladies I know recommend going the online prescription service route, but we recently switched insurers, and I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.

🗑️ How to make money dumpster diving |

More young people are turning waste into wealth.
According to a recent EduBirdie survey, 31% of Gen Z and millennials have tried dumpster diving, with 70% saying they do it primarily to save money.
Amid rising costs and an uncertain economy, salvaged goods have a lure – as well as an intrinsic value. However, even if dumpster diving brings in some extra cash, it may not always be the best use of time.
Side note: My Brooklyn neighborhood is a treasure trove for good street finds. Some of my best discoveries include gorgeous glass stacking side tables, vintage garden chairs, a Botkier handbag and a groovy Grateful Dead T-shirt.
