Would you feel safe driving in a car that lets you take your eyes off the road? That's the key system automakers including Ford are chasing to build, while some cities in the US already offer driverless taxi services.
Enhanced driver-assistance systems, which automatically control speed and steering would allow drivers to tend to other things while behind the wheel.
There is however a growing industry debate about whether the eyes-off technology is worth offering at all. Some executives and industry experts argue that handing control back and forth between the car and human driver is unworkable or unsafe, and raises thorny liability issues.
